Additional Features of Conference

Throughout the day of May 16th, additional features will be offered:

Listening Booths
Heather Dean and Carol Zamonski will be on-hand in a semi-private setting to listen to participants who need to discharge long and short term feelings arising from workshop topics on racism and economic justice. These feelings can have roots in cultural and personal history. Discharging feelings leads to clearer thinking. Heather and Carol have 15 years of counseling experience.

"Going Green in the Hood": Environmental and Food Justice Booth
Ruby White, of Jazzy Greens, will be hosting a booth to teach environmental and food justice through fun activities! Get your face painted, do enviro-experiments and activities, and learn about the importance of community gardening, and connecting science and nutrition to racism and economic justice.

WCRS - Simply Living's local Community Radio station will be on-hand, audio recording parts of the conference for broadcasting across the radio and/or internet.

Introducing Confronting Racism: Building United Movements

Confronting Racism: Building United Movements Ohio Conference

Introduction

Confronting Racism: Building United Movements will take place on Saturday, May 16th 2009 at The Ohio State University. We would like to thank Catalyst Project, LeftTurn Magazine, SOUL, Colors of Resistance, organizers at the BASTARD conference, and many others for providing us inspiration in both language and in concept for this conference.

Its our goal that Confronting Racism: Building United Movements will be an organizing space for students and community members throughout Ohio, especially women, people of color, queer, and working-class people, to develop the skills and the vision they need to struggle for a collective liberation against corporate power and institutional oppression. To these ends, Confronting Racism: Building United Movements will provide both structured workshops and more open-space-style discussion spaces that will develop participants’ basic organizing skills and deepen their political analysis and visions toward fundamental social change. The Open Space discussions’ goal is to provide a place for structured conversations on specific topics without requiring a talking head to lead the conversation.. We are excited to see what comes out of these free-form sessions!

The Theme

The theme for the Confronting Racism: Building United Movements conference will be “Connecting the dots: racism and issues of global capitalism.” We envision a conference with workshops and action-oriented discussions exposing the interconnectedness of racism with issues of global capitalism affecting us locally such as;
• affordable housing • employment justice
• access to healthcare • public transportation
• immigration • environmental and food justice
• police brutality and prison abolition • physical and sexual violence
• queer & trans liberation • indigenous solidarity
• militarism, and more.

This is an opportunity to examine our common ground within seemingly separate issues and develop a unified voice of resistance against global capitalism and imperialism as we continue building a collective liberation movement in Ohio. We are committed to building an anti-racist, anti-imperialist, multiracial, feminist, queer and trans liberationist, anti-authoritarian movement against global capitalism and promoting the understanding that there are multiple valid approaches to doing this work. Please come and let us hear your voice.

We are now accepting proposals for workshops that speak to our stated theme and that folks in Ohio might find particularly interesting. It is our goal that every workshop will end with a “call to action” please include your action items in your proposals. You may email proposals to the conference email, OrganizeCBUS@googlegroups.com

Proposals are due no later than April 15th please!

Please keep your synopsis to under 200 words. Keep your bio to less than 100.
Our intention is adding this information is to provide people who come to the conference without a lot of experience on the subject matter informed as to exactly what they are getting into. Do not list your institutional accomplishments! We’re sure they’re great, but don’t see them as relevant here.

1. We understand that we have not been given the tools to challenge the behavior of racism that exists within our communities.
2. We understand that Historically privilege has been defined to equal white. Presently it has become increasing an issue to ones access to resources wealth.
3. We understand racism can be defined as race prejudice backed with institutional power.
4. We understand that we have directly and or indirectly taken part in perpetuating the idea that whiteness is what is desirable which in tern maintaining the systematic implementation of racism
5. We are committed to acknowledging racism and taking the required steps to undo racism on an individual, cultural and institutional level.
6. We are committed to developing diverse communities and leadership that uphold the struggle for human justice.
8. We are committed to organizing toward a human and just society
